Interactive digital signage: what is it and what are the goals?

“What is interactive digital signage?” is a question that’s often heard, especially when you have just started exploring new ways of communicating to your target audience (digitally). On this page you will first learn what digital signage exactly is, in order to understand the interactive variant.

What is digital signage?

Digital signage is a scalable solution that helps you communicate with your target audience at a specific location. You are in full control of the solution: display a message on one, a hundred or a thousand displays. With just one click from one central location, you can change what is displayed on any screen in a network of audiovisual displays.

Ordering printed promotional materials with long lead times has become a thing of the past. Digital signage is fast and easy.

Integration of three elements

Implementing digital signage requires three different elements that must be integrated with each other:

  • Hardware
  • Content Management Software
  • Content

ProDVX provides reliable, commercial grade hardware like displays, touchscreens and Panel PCs. Our BoxPCs are mediaplayers that are used as part of digital signage solutions as well.

ProDVX can also help you to select the right Content Management Software, which you will need to distribute your content. Our global network of partners provides a wide range of software solutions to achieve any goal. Are you looking for any basic content management for a single screen? For example, to play a simple photo reel or loop a video? Then the ProDVX device management tool ProMGR might also be an option for you!

Specific software applications other than Content Management Software might also be suitable for your situation. Examples include a self-service kiosk, room booking system or a queuing system. These require interactivity.

Therefore it is important to first think about your digital signage objectives. We will talk more about this in the next section.

ProDVX can also connect you to a system integrating partner who will assist you in installing the hardware and software at your location. Please contact one of our experts for advice.

Goals of the solution: one-way communication or two-way interactive communication

To get the most out of your digital solution begin by defining your communication goals:

  • One-way communication. This is known as the most traditional form of digital signage. It’s static or animated content and video’s that are often used to increase awareness through advertising (dynamically). Examples include text with photos, visuals, videos and commercials. The best thing is that digital signage enables you to communicate 1-on-1 with your target audience at a specific location. Or it enables you to bulk-communicate to your target audience across all locations.
  • Two-way communication. This is interactive content intended to stimulate interactions, like placing an order on a POS kiosk, scanning the barcode of a T-shirt, or registering yourself on a visitor registration kiosk. Two-way communication requires specific applications that are designed for engagement. And it requires specific hardware components, like a touch screen and very often add-on devices like a scanner, printer or payment terminal.

The goal of your communication will determine the hardware you will need. One-way communication is achieved with a ‘normal’ screen, without touch functionality, as the goal here is to ‘just’ get one single message across.

Two-way communication requires interacting with users through displays that have a touch functionality and/or Panel PCs with extra add-on devices. These add-on devices stimulate interaction. Two-way communication is the main goal for interactive digital signage.

When your goal is to stimulate interaction through two-way communication, specific applications are available in our network of partners that can help you achieve that single goal. Contact us or take a look at our software partner page.
